Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct, comprehensive system of healthcare emphasizing the use of natural therapeutics in promoting health and preventing disease. Naturopathic doctors are licensed to practice as independent doctors who are authorized to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. Naturopathic doctors diagnose by taking thorough histories, performing physical exams, and ordering imaging and laboratory testing. Time-tested naturopathic principles and practices are integrated with the latest advances in medical science.

suzanne tang with patientThe six guiding principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

First Do No Harm – Naturopathic doctors utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies first.
Identify and Treat the Cause – Naturopathic medicine effectively addresses the underling causes of illness rather than simply suppressing symptoms.
The Healing Power of Nature – Naturopathic doctors recognize that each individual possesses an inherent self-healing ability. We strive to support, facilitate, and promote this healing process by removing the obstacles to health.
Treat the Whole Person – Naturopathic doctors acknowledge each individual as an integrated whole of spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, and environmental influences and elements.
Doctor as Teacher – Naturopathic doctors educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining optimal health.
Prevention – Naturopathic medicine is committed to identifying disease risk factors and offering patients appropriate interventions to prevent illness.

Naturopathic Doctors are trained at accredited, four-year, post-graduate medical schools. The comprehensive medical training includes studies in basic medical sciences, physical diagnosis, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging studies, pharmacology, clinical medical sciences, and a variety of natural therapeutics. Naturopathic doctors are required to complete a two-year clinical internship and pass a national basic science and a clinical boards exam to be licensed.
